There are 500 vessels, containing certain quantity of wine, some facts about them

1. the quantity of pure wine is an integral number(litres)
2. the qantity of liquid in vessels is an integral number(litres)
3. the minimum qty of wine in any vessel is 20 litres
4. the maxaimum qty of liquid is 50 litres in any vessel.

what is the minimum no. of vessels that can have equal quantity of liquid

ans options

a. 16 b. 17 c. 22 d. (both a and b)

Hi;
Please clarify whether the vessels do contain pure wine or a mixture of wine or liquid.

In the absence of such information and looking at the answer choices, it is imperative to assume that these vessels contain either wine or liquid. The idea is that all vessels have quantitiesranging f from 20 to 50 litres.

To minimize the 50 litre vessels, the minmum would be 16.

Hi

This question is quite similar to a CAT question that appeared in 2001 or 2002 in which there were 128 boxes in which one had to put between 125 and 144 toys etc etc.

It actually does not matter whether the containers have anything other than wine or not.

The minimum quantity a container can have is 20 litres and the maximum quantity a container can have is 50 litres and the volumes that each container holds is an integral value.

Therefore, there can only be 31 (50 - 20 + 1) different values for the volume of liquid in a container.

We are interested in finding out the minimum number of containers that have equal volume.

Therefore, we have to distribute them as evenly as possible so that the containers that have equal volume is kept at minimum.

500 / 31 will give you a quotient of 16. 16*31 is 496. We will have another 4 more containers to fill. They can also be equally distributed to four different volumes.

Hence, the answer to the question is 17.

Best wishes

Hi;

The remaining four vessels can be filled with wine and not the liquid.17 is correct if you do not differntiate between the wine & the liquid and if the liquid is not 'Wine' and certainly if the only liquid we know of is "Wine"

, Nevertheless, An interesting problem!!!.
